As our students immerse themselves in varied activities this summer—camps, athletic competitions, community service efforts, and more—the fondest wish in the English department is that they will tuck a book under their arms as they go. Reading allows us to gather knowledge, gain empathy, think critically about our world, and derive pleasure from the printed word. S.I. Hayakawa observes that, “It is not true that we have only one life to live; if we can read, we can live as many more lives and as many kinds of lives as we wish.”
