PT Students Earn National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards
Senior Pemberton McGuire and junior Andrea Untama each earned National Silver Medals in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards; Pemberton was recognized for printmaking, and Andrea for photography. Pemberton's print, Small and Mean, also won a special monetary prize called the Hoosier Creativity Award (recognizing works that "express special characteristics or features of living and working as a Hoosier in the State of Indiana") and it will also be included in the Regional Tour exhibition, which begins at Saks Fifth Avenue at Keystone at the Crossing from April through July and ends at the Indianapolis International Airport in summer of 2020 (full schedule here).

Freshman Alyssa Gaines was honored with three national awards: a Gold Medal, an American Voices Medal (awarded to only one writer per region), and the Best-in-Grade Award (awarded to two writers per grade level in the country). As a national winner, she was asked to share one of her poems on stage during the Scholastic Awards Ceremony on Sunday at Clowes Hall. The poems that took her this far in the writing contest began as humble assignments in the poetry unit for her English I Plus class taught by Laura Gellin. Over the course of the unit, Alyssa received feedback and worked hard to revise her poems to turn them into polished, powerful pieces. Both Alyssa and Laura have been invited to the National Scholastic Ceremony at Carnegie Hall in NYC this June to be honored. In addition, as a Regional American Voices nominee, Alyssa won a $5000 Butler University scholarship and a $10,000 IUPUI scholarship.
