Park Tudor's Position on Equity & Inclusion

Dear Members of the Park Tudor Community,

As a follow up to our note sent last Sunday to parents and Upper School students, we want to articulate our full position around the recent and senseless death of Mr. George Floyd while in the custody of the Minneapolis police. His death, and the deaths of so many other Black men and women, including Dreasjon Reed, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, and Trayvon Martin remind all of us that racism and injustices continue to plague this country. We share the fear that without change, innocent people will continue to die.

From the enslavement of the first African people in 1619, to our current state of affairs, America has failed in the areas of race, racism, and race relations, creating for its Black citizens structural and systemic barriers to equity and justice. We stand in solidarity with the Black community and with those in our community who are against racial injustice, and we support the ongoing efforts to achieve racial equity, justice, and peace.

We continue to evolve as an institution, and we have heard the feedback from many of you. We also know our origin as a predominantly white institution, and we understand that we must listen, learn, and do better. As a JK-12 educational institution, we also realize the immense impact we have on our students. We continue to work diligently in the areas of equity and inclusion, with regular training for our faculty and staff to help ensure cultural competency in our classrooms and across our community. We are also committed to hiring more faculty of color across the school to better reflect our diverse student population. Under the guidance of our new Director of Equity and Inclusion, these efforts will only increase and grow stronger.

We have developed a list of resources to share with current parents and students. Our vision looks forward to the continued development of a library of tools and information that our community can access for greater insight and education on matters of equity and inclusion. We have posted these resources on our website for easy accessibility, and we encourage you to use them and share them with others. Please reference the links below:

In addition, we are surveying our students so we can meet their needs during this crisis. We are making ourselves available to learn, listen, coach, inspire, and guide, and we are reaching out specifically to our Black students who are suffering differently and to a greater extent. We are also committed to hiring more faculty of color. We know that the dialogue is only just beginning as we seek out ways to end systemic racism.

Park Tudor graduates are taught to think critically and be leaders in the community. Please join with us as we all work to make our world more equitable and just.

Respectfully,

Gareth Vaughan
