Exit Strategies
By Maggie Harbison, Physical Education and Health Teacher

Did you know the biggest part of a lesson is the first 5-10 minutes and the last 5-10 minutes? It’s important to share important information at that time. For this reason, exit slips are huge in reviewing main ideas that were taught during the lesson.

During health, 8th grade students were learning about the health triangle. The health triangle is exactly what it sounds like - a triangle with three sides that pertain to health. The three sides include social health, mental/emotional health and physical health. Students discussed characteristics a truly healthy person could possess from each of those three categories. Students also took away a big idea that for someone to be truly healthy, all sides must be in balance.

As an exit slip for this lesson, I challenged each student to share a “snapshot" of his/her learning. During the last 5 minutes of class, students were asked to get out their phone and take a picture of themselves doing something healthy (which was just discussed). Then, the students emailed their photos to me, with an explanation of what part of the health triangle it was in and how it benefited them. This seems like a very simple activity, but students love being able to get out their phones and they also love being active. The best thing was that students realized being physically active can improve all three sides of the health triangle! For me, it was an easy way to see if students took away the main ideas from the class.
