2020 Service of Spirit Award Recipient
Susan Stoops Watson is considered the foundation of the Tudor Hall Class of 1970. For the past 50 years she has kept her classmates up-to-date of each other’s lives, cared for many of them, and made sure the class came together for celebrations and events. But she has done so much more. As a classmate was dying from breast cancer, Susan went to Maine to be with her during her final days of life. She helped another classmate return to the U.S, when it was no longer safe to remain in Venezuela as an American citizen. She opened her home for several months to a classmate and her children after they suffered trauma and loss. Susan’s home has always been open to anyone who needed a place to stay.
And while Susan was doing so much for classmates, she was also managing Transplant Operations at IU. In this capacity she was responsible for many of the insurance transplant contracts and was key to qualifying patients. If the transplant was unfunded and an emergency, she was the final decision maker. Often these decisions had to be made quickly. Many days she went to battle with insurance companies; she was saving lives every day of her professional career.
Susan truly is the bond that keeps the Tudor Hall Class of 1970 together and clearly exemplifies the spirit of service.
