The Board of Directors has unanimously selected Mr. Gareth Vaughan to become Park Tudor Head of School effective July 1, 2017.
Head of School Search
Park Tudor School in Indianapolis is pleased to announce the selection of its next Head of School to begin with the 2017-2018 school year.
Mr. Gareth Vaughan
The Park Tudor Board of Directors has unanimously selected Mr. Gareth Vaughan to become Park Tudor Head of School effective July 1, 2017. Gareth was the Head of School for eight years at Indian Springs School in Birmingham, Alabama.
Our Head of School Search Committee, aided by Wickenden Associates, embarked on a process last summer to engage the community in defining the essential attributes for the Head of School, as defined in the Opportunity Statement, and in undertaking an extensive national search. During the search, hundreds of prospective candidates were screened for the position, of which a few dozen formally applied and seven were interviewed as semi-finalists. From this group, four well-qualified finalists visited our school in October for extensive interviews with representatives of our community, including parents, faculty, administrators, students, alumni and directors. We carefully reviewed the community feedback and numerous outside references for each finalist. At the conclusion of this comprehensive process, it was the unanimous recommendation of the Head of School Search Committee that Gareth Vaughan is the right candidate to lead our school.
Gareth is known as a leader who is thoughtful, principled and of good character and integrity. At Indian Springs, Gareth helped the school achieve maximum enrollment. He successfully oversaw two strategic plans and two AdvancED/Southern Association of Independent Schools accreditations, in which the accreditation team said the school had made extraordinary progress. He also led the school's largest-ever capital campaign, a $20 million effort that had a transformational impact on the campus. The new facilities earned national recognition from the American Institute of Architects, and Business Insider listed Indian Springs among "the 12 most beautiful schools in America."
Before taking on the Headship at Indian Springs, Gareth enjoyed a long tenure at Washington International School (WIS) in Washington, D.C. He began as a science teacher and was steadily promoted at the school, first becoming Dean of Students and then Upper School Head, a position he held for 12 years. Before starting at WIS, Gareth was the Alumni Network Secretary and Alumni Organizer for the United World College of the Atlantic in Wales. Gareth was an adjunct faculty member at George Mason University's Teacher Certification Program for International School teachers and an instructor in the Visual Arts in the Community Outreach Program at the Corcoran School of Art. Gareth has worked with Teach for America, Breakthrough Collaborative, and Higher Achievement Summer School, all with an eye toward supporting students from under-resourced communities.
As an undergraduate, Gareth studied biology at the University of York before earning a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of London. He also holds a Master of Arts in Public Policy with an emphasis on Environment and Resource Management from George Washington University, and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Teachers College Columbia University. He is a dual citizen of the United States and the United Kingdom.
We would like to thank everyone who participated in this process, especially the Head of School Search Committee for their extensive work in interviewing, meeting with, and arranging visits for our finalist candidates. Each of them took their responsibility as a member of the committee very seriously. From asking tough and important questions to spending the extra time to ensure the concerns of the community were taken into consideration, and taking a thoughtful, open approach to selecting our next leader, they worked tirelessly with professionalism and care.
We would also like to thank the parents, students, faculty, administrators, alumni, Board and Trustee members who took time to meet with, and provide feedback on, the candidates. Your willingness to share your time and feedback was critically important as we sought to identify a strong, visionary leader who would embrace our school's culture and values. We are truly grateful for your trust and support. We also thank Peter Kraft, our Interim Head of School, for his strong support of this process and the leadership that he is providing during this transition period.
While Gareth will not be starting as Head of School until July 1, the work to ensure a smooth transition for him will begin almost immediately and we look forward to introducing him to you in person soon.
Please join us in warmly welcoming Gareth to Park Tudor School. We believe Gareth will be an exceptional Head for our school.
