Director of College Counseling

Job Description:

Park Tudor is currently seeking an experienced and dynamic Director of College Counseling. Responsible for overseeing the college counseling program for grades 9 through 12, the Director of College Counseling will work with a team to plan, implement and evaluate Park Tudor’s comprehensive program to assist students as they navigate the college admission process. This position also frequently consults with the Park Tudor administrative team and student support team.

Essential Responsibilities:

Essential functions include the following:

  • Plans and implements a comprehensive program of education and guidance to meet the needs of students, parents, and faculty in the college search and admission process for grades 9 through 12.
  • Supervises the work of the College Counseling Team.
  • Assists students in identifying their needs, interests and goals as they relate to the selection of, and application to, appropriate colleges and universities.
  • Communicates regularly with parents regarding their supporting role in college admission and assists them in understanding the needs and desires of their children as well as the various facets of the process.
  • Identifies and presents opportunities and programs to students who have special needs and interests (e.g., diversity interests, minority status, financial need, learning or physical disabilities, athletic and career interests).
  • Works closely with the Upper School Psychologist/Learning Specialist, Upper School Counselor and Director of Equity and Inclusion on a case-by-case basis.
  • Addresses the social and emotional pressures on students and families associated with the college search, application, and admissions processes.
  • Leads the College Counseling Team in reviewing student schedules and periodically assists in the monitoring of their academic needs and progress.
  • Administers and/or oversees the testing program for college admission (PSAT, PreACT, SAT, ACT and AP), including support for the provision of school-based extended-time testing, and assists students and parents in the registration process.
  • Raises the visibility of Park Tudor School locally, regionally, and nationally.
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with a broad network of colleges, universities, and professional organizations and assists them in understanding our school, curriculum, and students.
  • Hosts College Admissions Representatives while on campus and attends admissions meetings and conferences that are held in the Indianapolis community.
  • Visits colleges annually to gain an understanding of campus cultures, programs, and admission priorities.
  • Assists students in developing timelines and completing tasks associated with the application process; suggests specific colleges to investigate and visit; reviews student essays and helps students develop and practice appropriate interview skills. Writes an individualized recommendation for each counselee.
  • Develops and annually updates the Park Tudor School Profile for Colleges.
  • Plans and executes annual programs and events for students and parents.
  • Works with faculty to increase their understanding of their role in the college admissions process, including the writing of teacher recommendations and evaluations.
  • Models a commitment to continued professional development and growth and innovative programming.
  • Participates in professional development activities including membership in regional, state and national organizations (NIPSCA, INACAC, NACAC, NAIS, ACT and College Board); serves periodically as speaker or panelist at meetings and workshops; keeps abreast of current trends and ethical standards of the profession.
  • Serves on school committees as requested by the Head of School or Associate Head of School.
  • Prepares the Annual Report to the Board of Directors and Head of School that reviews the year in college admission for our seniors and that highlights major local and national trends.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualification Requirements:

Education: Master’s Degree preferred

Experience: 5-7 years of previous experience as a college counselor or college admissions officer

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Counseling license or college counseling certificate desirable, but not required Independent school experience preferred
