An Inside Look at College Admissions
An Inside Look at College Admissions

Juniors and parents who attended the recent College Admissions Forum were treated to some invaluable tips and insights from the senior admission officers from Case Western Reserve University, University of Kentucky in Lexington and Wabash College. The panelists provided an "inside look" at the college admissions process.

Topics ranged from how each institution conducts the review of college applications (individual readers from the Indiana area to review committees) and what they look for in a student's application (strength of curriculum, grade trends, extracurricular passions and interesting essays) to the role of parents in the process.

The Vice President of Enrollment Management from Case Western, Rick Bischoff, described the data that colleges are collecting about students and how they use that data (including when and if students are reading their emails from the university and how many times they access the website) as "demonstrated interest" in the school. He noted the importance of grades and test scores but emphasized how his university admissions staff is dedicated to considering the "whole" student and determining how they might impact the campus community.

Mike Thorp, Dean of Enrollment Management at Wabash College, described the personal essays that were most effective as those that described who students are, what's interesting about them and how they will impact the campus.

Eric Orr, Associate Director of Admissions at UK, noted that students at Park Tudor have a tremendous advantage in the admissions process because of the opportunities offered here. He highlighted the importance of students investing in the college search by going on campus visits, doing research on the specific programs, and experiencing the "vibe" of campus culture.

Juniors are encouraged to visit college campuses during the upcoming Spring Break. Campus Visit Checklists are available in the College Counseling Office for interested students. Scheduling a campus tour, going to an information session, attending a class, eating in the dining hall and contacting Park Tudor graduates at a particular university are often useful ways to spend time on campus. Check with your college counselor if you have any questions.
