English

EnglishThe study of English language arts at Park Tudor begins at the junior kindergarten level and continues through grade 12.

Members of the Park Tudor English Department value the English language for both its practicality and aesthetics. They are dedicated to helping students become confident, independent users of the language – as readers, writers and speakers – and helping them develop an appreciation for its central role in a democratic society.

The English Department works with all Park Tudor students to help them develop skills in literature comprehension, effective use of the English language, and effective evaluation of writing and speaking techniques and linguistics. Using age-appropriate teaching methods, they also seek to develop skills in conducting research, using all available media, and in working both independently and in groups.

As we encourage students in this pursuit, we work to develop skills in comprehending a variety of literary genres written from diverse perspectives; in evaluating the effectiveness of the written and spoken language; and in using language effectively in both speaking and writing. We also facilitate the development of research skills and media literacy. To prepare students for present and future academic and real life endeavors, we provide opportunities for independent and collaborative projects. Through such activities, we encourage students to value their own opinions as well as the informed opinions of others with dignity and promise.
