The technology department ascribes to a philosophy that instruction should be learner-centered, meaning that students take responsibility for their own learning and in doing so, reach a state of owning the information. We believe that a learner-centered environment is not dependent on technology. However, technology in this context can offer learners fundamentally different experiences than other mediums such as paper and pencil. In fact, technology can serve as a powerful amplifier, extending the reach and depth of young learners.
We believe that the curriculum of our school and the instructional methods we use must assure us that the minds of our students are well-coached to create knowledge from information, to get to the essence of information, to make sense of it, and to make it meaningful and useful for themselves and others.
At Park Tudor the computer and technology program facilitates this kind of learning. Our goal is for children learn to define problems, to assimilate relevant data, to conceptualize and reorganize the information, to discuss their findings, and to collaborate with others.
The technology department believes that students learn best when they are actively constructing meaning and knowledge from the information they acquire. We believe that computers are a powerful tool for knowledge exploration and creation. Used in this way, technology can help our students be prepared for what our mission states is an increasingly complex and diverse world.
In the Upper School, the computer science program maintains an exciting, interactive learning environment through regularly engaging students in hands-on activities to reinforce class content. The goal is to provide students with an above-average computer science background in preparation for college and industry applications. We offer courses that are specifically geared towards the College Board's "Computer Science A" and "Computer Science AB" exam, allowing students an opportunity to earn college credit.
