The study of English language arts at Park Tudor School begins at the preschool level and continues through grade 12.
Members of the Park Tudor Department of English value the English language for both its practical and aesthetic potential. We are dedicated to helping students become confident, independent users of the language—as readers, as writers, as speakers—and to helping them develop an appreciation for its central role in a democratic society. We believe that the lifelong pursuit of receiving, assimilating, and expressing language in both pragmatic and artistic ways is essential to meaningful participation in all aspects of human affairs.
As we encourage students in this pursuit, we work to develop skills in comprehending a variety of literary genres written from a wide variety of perspectives; in evaluating the effectiveness of written and spoken language; and in using language effectively in both writing and speaking. We also seek to develop skills in conducting research, using all available media, and in working independently and in groups. Through such activities, we encourage students to value their own opinions as well as the informed opinions of others, to regard themselves and others as people of dignity and promise.
